Folate – Why Vitamin B9 is Important for Energy, Brain, and Health

Folate (vitamin B9) is essential for the body's cells, energy and brain function. Yet many people get too little of it. In this post, you'll learn why folate is important, how it differs from folic acid, and how our natural folate supplement with B12 can help you feel better – every day.

What is folate (vitamin B9) – and why does the body need it?

Folate is a water-soluble B vitamin found naturally in foods like spinach, broccoli, avocados, and legumes. The body uses folate to:

  • Support normal cell division and DNA synthesis
  • Produce red blood cells
  • Contribute to normal psychological function
  • Reduce fatigue and exhaustion

Folate deficiency can cause:

  • Low energy and fatigue
  • Poor concentration
  • Irritability
  • In severe cases: megaloblastic anemia

The difference between folate and folic acid

  • Folate : the natural form, found in food and bioactive supplements
  • Folic acid : a synthetic form, which must be converted in the body before it works

At Aarja Health, we use active folate (5-MTHF) – a form that the body can use directly, and which is suitable for people with genetic variations (e.g. MTHFR mutation). In fact, 40% of the population has this gene that prevents them from converting folic acid to folate.

Folate and pregnancy – an important topic

Folate is essential before and during pregnancy to prevent neural tube defects in the fetus. The Norwegian Directorate of Health recommends that all women of childbearing age take folate supplements daily – at least one month before conception.

But folate is also important after the first trimester. It contributes to:

  • Normal tissue growth
  • Blood production
  • Reduced fatigue
  • Brain health

Why combine B12 with folate?

Vitamin B12 and folate work together in several processes, including red blood cell formation and nerve signaling. A deficiency in B12 can worsen symptoms of folate deficiency, and vice versa.

Therefore, we recommend a supplement with both bioactive folate and methyl-B12 – which you get in our product.

When should you consider folate supplements?

You will particularly benefit from a folate+B12 supplement if you:

  • Planning pregnancy or are pregnant
  • Are a woman of childbearing age
  • Often feel tired or unfocused
  • Are you vegan or eat little animal products?
  • Are over 50 years old
  • Has impaired absorption in the gastrointestinal tract (e.g. with MTHFR gene variant)
