VITAMIN C Acts As An Antioxidant
Vitamin C, also called ascorbic acid, is a necessary vitamin for health. It acts as an antioxidant and has many EFSA approved health claims. Let us present the benefits of vitamin C to you!
Vitamin C has been included in many health studies and has 15 EFSA approved health claims. It is one of the most common vitamins and is found in many natural foods such as oranges, strawberries, papaya and broccoli. To reap the benefits of eating fruits and most vegetables, it is best to eat them raw or lightly cooked. Nordic berries are also rich in vitamin C and sea buckthorn in particular is a real vitamin C bomb! Our popular Isotonic Spoorty Boost contains both vitamin C and sea buckthorn!
What exactly is vitamin C?
Ascorbic acid is a natural substance found in almost all living organisms. It has existed for billions of years and is the very basis of life. You could say that ascorbic acid acts as an oil for the machinery of life. Mammals produce ascorbic acid themselves, and in case of biochemical stress or physical trauma, high doses of ascorbic acid are produced to normalize the body.
The only mammals that do not produce this themselves are monkeys, guinea pigs and humans, due to evolution. We must therefore get vitamin C from our diet. Most of the vitamin C is found in our muscles and our blood.
Supports the immune system and fights oxidative stress.
Vitamin C also fights oxidative stress. According to EFSA's approved claims, vitamin C contributes to protecting cells from oxidative stress. An excess of free radicals is called oxidative stress, and antioxidants, such as vitamin C, help fight it. Oxidative stress occurs all the time in our bodies, but the imbalance between free radicals and antioxidants causes oxidation, which has been studied to negatively affect health when the condition is chronic. Oxidative stress can be caused by intense exercise, poor diet, smoking, air pollution and stress.
The positive effects are achieved by taking vitamin C, 200 mg daily, in addition to the recommended daily intake. When it comes to a good immune system, we want to emphasize the importance of a balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle. The immune system is a complex network. Vitamin A, D, B6, B12 and folic acid are necessary vitamins to support a normally functioning immune system.

Studies show that vitamin C supports normal collagen production and is needed for collagen synthesis. Collagen itself is the most abundant protein in our bodies. Vitamin C thus promotes our normal collagen production for the normal function of blood vessels, bones, cartilage, gums, skin and teeth. The body's collagen production slows as a result of aging, but an adequate intake of vitamin C from the diet supports normal collagen production. Using collagen as a supplement can help maintain optimal collagen levels when they begin to decline.
Maintain normal energy metabolism and iron absorption.
Vitamin C supports normal energy metabolism, which means it is needed to convert food into energy for many body functions. It is also needed for the normal functioning of the nervous system and supports normal psychological functions. Vitamin C deficiency, which is rare, first appears as fatigue and exhaustion, which are symptoms of many other deficiencies or diseases as well.
Vitamin C contributes to normal iron absorption. Iron may not be absorbed efficiently through the diet. When eating food containing iron, it is recommended that you take vitamin C at the same time. Dairy products, eggs, teas and foods high in oxalate can inhibit iron absorption. Vitamin C also helps vitamin E to regenerate. Vitamin E also has antioxidant effects in our bodies.

The recommended dose of Vitamin C
The recommended daily intake of vitamin C is 80 mg for healthy adults. There is no official safe upper limit of daily intake by the EFSA for vitamin C because the body can eliminate excess vitamin C. Increased amount of vitamin C can be taken to relieve the symptoms of flu. The highest dose is considered to be 2000 mg daily, for example during a cold. However, the use of higher doses of vitamin C should be consulted with a doctor if there is a need for it. Along with a healthy and varied diet, we recommend following the official recommendations.
